Chapter 3
2 Timothy 3:6 - There are many traps along the road of redemption. For some women a weakness in moral character is their downfall. That seems to be the focus of this verse. The word for "weak women" (NASB) is a diminutive form of "woman". A diminutive form would be literally translated "little woman." However, the connotation of that word is derogatory, which is to say, "silly" or "idle woman".
2 Timothy 3:9-12 - In this passage Paul is trying to help Timothy understand what is happening to him and to encourage him to persevere. He compares Timothy's conduct to Jannes and Jambres. The latter two abandoned the faith, but Paul says of Timothy, "you followed my teaching." He writes in verse 11 that Timothy even followed Paul into suffering. Paul tells how the Lord delivered him from persecution and suffering to encourage Timothy to endure until that day of deliverance. Then finally, Paul finishes up by stating that anyone who wants a godly life will suffer. We should not be surprised by the fiery trials that have come upon us for the testing of our faith as though some strange thing were happening to us (1 Peter 4:12). Are you suffering? Are you afflicted? Then you living a normal Christian life.
2 Timothy 3:13 - Paul is talking about 2 different types of people who will do harm in the church: (1) Evil men and (2) charlatans or imposters. These are not necessarily one in the same, though often that holds true. Both types of people will, being deceived themselves, will deceive others.
2 Timothy 3:14 - Paul is setting up a contrast "But you..." The "you" is thrown to the first word of the sentence to emphasize what Timothy should be doing: "remain" in Paul's teachings.
