Chapter 2
1 Timothy 2:3-4 - What does Paul say is good in the eyes of the Lord our savior? That we should desire all men to be saved. Verse 3 points out that the Lord is our savior. The next verse says we should desire to spread that salvation to others. This verse is foundational for building an evangelistic church. It can also be used against those who are truly hyper-calvinist. If we should desire all men to be saved, then we should take the Scripture seriously when the Lord says, "God is not willing that any should perish but all should come to repentance."
1 Timothy 2:5 - This verse provides good support for the exclusivity of the Gospel. "Only one mediator between God and man...Jesus Christ."
1 Timothy 2:12 - The 'spirit of the age' is certainly trying to take the woman out of the position that she held for thousands of years. Modern society is trying to explain away this verse, which is quite plainly written. No doubt, sinful man has abused the "rule" (Genesis 3:16) over his wife, but has not man abused other duties? Does it thus mean that creation order should be denied because of sinful man's actions? Obviously no.
Here the Lord places restrictions on the extent of a woman's ministry. We have spoken of laws written in creation order, this is also one of them. Paul cites creation order as his reasons in the following two verses. So a woman may complain, "Hey, why can't I teach man?" The Lord might say, "There are over 3.3 billion women in the world. When you are done ministering to them, then you can minister to men."
1 Timothy 2:15 - A possible meaning of this verse is that the female race will be "redeemed" from the sin of Eve by the bearing of Jesus Christ. Man had no part in it. It was all the honor of the female race. In that way, they are redeemed.
